Devotion is an internal attraction. It is a stage of unexpressed but experience. It may have many faces. Importance of devotion is too vast. It is an immortal feeling which has no limitation / bounds to life. We get engrossed in ancient times only due to strength of devotion. Because of this, we are directly connected to God, we experience his existence. We humbly bend in front of Him only due to devotion.
In Indian culture, it is said that there were many women Sages (Rishi), of which one was Juhu. Juhu means Holy-fire (Yadnya) and its surroundings (Havan-kund). In ancient times, many Holy-fire (Yadnya) were held so this place is named as Juhu. This pure place has been gifted by wide beach and beautiful nature. This place has ancient temple which is Shri. Mukteswar Temple. Earlier this temple has wood and brick-roof, 3 wooden doors, net fence place which was open, place to sit in the temple, flooring of raw Shahbadi tiles and interiors of Shri. Mukteswar. From ancients times, there are idols of Shri. Mukteswar (Pindi), Shri. Ganesh, Shri. Vishnu, stoned (Shaligram) idol of Goddess Parvati, Shri. Hanuman and Samadhi of Saptpurush in the temple. It is said that after kingdom of Peshwe, this temple has been constructed by some Brahmins. During those times, Juhu had large population of Brahmins. Later on the next generation shifted to Gurgaon, Dadar areas for their convenience. They sold their properties to Wadwal, Choukalshi Pachkalashi also to Gujar caste people. Most of these, had come from Thane and Raigad District to Mumbai.
Mr. Putalaji Rane was one of prestigious person in Juhu, who was non-Brahmin. He handled the construction of Bhayander Railway Bridge as an Engineer. His brother Krishnajirao Rane was also one of the reputed people. He constructed museum in Veer Jijamata Bhosale park at Bhykhala, formerly known as Rani Baug. Also he established Rane museum at Juhu and it is a tourists' attraction. The renovation of Shri. Mukteshwar Temple, has been made under his guidance and help of Local Village Panchayat, Marathi and Gujarati devotees. The Rane family built Village Goddess-Shitaladevi Temple and also built Brahmakund on their property and taking care of its even today.
Until, about 1956 in this village, most of Wadwal (Mali) people had coconut famrs. Amongst them, a local villager, a Gurav took careof Shri. Mukteshwar Temple. Then a reputed person from village and retired officer from Income -Tax department, Mr. Gangadhar Bhaskar Jukar and Shamaldas Shah, Madhukar K. Raut, Raghunath Y. Rane and others collectively established a Public Trustee organization. It was legally registered. Gangadhar Bhaskar Jukar was the Chairman of it. Around 1960, in Juhu village, in social area a twenty-year young Anant Mhatre was risen the social section. He established Juhu Nutan Yuvak Mandal and through which he restarted the trend of conducting Satyanarayan pooja, the trend which was broken for seventeen years. Maharashtra State Establishment Day and other social work was stated. After the sudden death of Gangadhar Jukar in railway accident, the villagers felt the trustee-ship should be with the person who is equally efficient and strong. Accordingly Mr. Raghunath Jukar, Mr. Moreshwar Jukar and other handed over the Trustee-ship and Secretarial position to Pushpakant Mhatre. From that day till the end Mr. Mhatre was responsible trustee and Chief Secretary of the Temple.
Juhu localites had to go to Andheri or Goregaon to celebrate Ram-Navmi. Understanding this need the Trustees established Shri. Ram, Shri Laxman and Goddess Sita idol on 5th April 1960, in the temple. Mr. Chattre Guruji Vedparayan was the purohit of this ocassion, he was the panchang-karta (doer) from Girgaon. From that day Ram-navmi is celebrated in the temple. For the purpose of celebrating various festivals every year in the temple, the Trustees thought collecting permanent funds. Till 1964 minimum of Rs. 100/- was collected from the devotees. Then the amount was deposited in bank and from its interest, festivals like Mahashivratri, Ramnavmi. Hanuman Jayanti, Shri. Kurma Jayanti etc were celebrated. A priest (pujari) was appointed. Donation boxes were kept. The increasing population in the village lead to more devotees visiting the temple. Slowly the need to develop the surroundings of the temple was felt.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation took some land to widen Juhu-way (currently Shri. Mukteswar Temple way) to forty feet and also to widen Gandhi gram road to 30 feet. During this, Mr. Pushpakant Mhatre thought that the renovation of the temple should be according to Indian Archeology. The Trustees accordingly finalized the day of 24th November 1984. They invited Mr. Gagangiri Maharaj conduct the Bhoomi-pujan of the renovation construction. While laying the foundation, Mr. Gagangiri Maharaj told Mr. Mhatre to construct the temple by the method of Hemand-panthi. Hence the trustees told Honourable Vastu-Scientist B.G alias Bhanudas Bhat to make the plan of the temple. He did it without any charges. As per his advise (Late) Mr. Hariprasad Sompura was appointed as he had scientific knowledge of Hamand-panthi method and had settled to Vile-Parle (Mumbai) from Rajasthan. He started making construction-plan of the temple. As per Mr. Mhatre's advice the art-work, design, sculptor was made of limestone, which was brought from Saurashtra. In 20th century, Mumbai's hugh temple of Hemand-panthi are was created. After ten years i.e. in 1994 the roof-top (kalas) of the renovated temple was established again by Mr. Gagangiri Maharaj, also he laid the foundation of the seven-floored building-plan of the temple. The interiors of Shri. Mukteswar Temple is of white Marble-granite. After the renovation, the deities of Shri. Mukteswar and Shri. Hanuman are in the same place and newly establishment of idols of Shri Ram, Shri Laxman, Goddess Sita, Goddess Parvati, Shri. Ganesh, Nandi and Kurma were in association of ex-trustee and editor of Free Press Journal (Late) A.B. Nair. The opportunity to establish the idols of Shri.
